I have not written a blog post in this blog for 180 days. That’s a very long time not to write, and as the days go by, my ‘fear’ of going back to writing has grown. There are many excuses I can use as to why I have been so silent, reasons of work, personal life, health, changes, etc. But at the end of the day, there is no excuse for not writing, just like there is no excuse for not exercising, finding a new job, looking after oneself, etc.

One of the many ‘excuses’ I hear from people is “I know it’s really important, but I just dont have time”. If you have time to do emails, and meetings, go to conferences, and think about new ideas, then you have time to blog. Not having time to blog is like saying “I dont have time to invest in my brand/marketing/networking”. And I am the first to admit it, not writing for such a long time in 4+ years.

How do you make time for blogging? Every person is different. I have tried different ways: i blocked time in the calendar (just to turn off the reminder, because i had “more burning issues to deal with” ; i tried coming up with a plan to update my 4 blogs on a weekly basis – which soon melted. so what worked for me? a weekly task in my ‘to do’s’ – “i dont care when you write the blog” I told myself “as long as you do it sometime this week”. I am a P in the Myers-Briggs analysis, so for me, a task that isnt tied to a schedule, helped me achieve my goal. If you are a J in the Myers-Briggs analysis, then blocking time in your calendar should do it.

One more thing I found is an obstacle from frequent writing: it is true each post should have a value to readers, but it doesnt mean one has to write an essay :) the ‘commitment’ to present a lengthy article is misleading. As long as there’s value in the content, it doesnt need to be a PHD paper.

I hope you found value in this post getting you to start/go back to writing in a blog.
